DMs are coming to Clubhouse

If you’ve ever wanted to connect with a speaker or audience member in a Clubhouse room, the app’s lack of a chat/messaging feature becomes apparent fast. Until now, you’ve been forced to go to those users’ Twitter or Instagram pages to make any non-audio connections.

That’s all changing with the announcement of a built-in chatting feature called Backchannel. The Backchannel feature includes:

  • One-on-one messaging

  • Group chats

  • A second inbox for “Requests” from users you don’t follow

  • Ability to send links (but not images or videos, for now)

You can find Backchannel by tapping the airplane icon ✈️ on the bottom right of the app home screen, inside of rooms, or on a user’s profile. You can also block and report users who you don’t want messages from.

Why it matters

This has been a key missing feature, so the addition of DMs begins a new chapter in the ongoing “Social Audio” war between Clubhouse, Twitter, and (perhaps to a lesser extent) Facebook. By including the ability to network within its own app, Clubhouse may soon be less reliant on off-app functionality.
