Yep: LinkedIn is Adding Audio Rooms

An Audio Events feature is coming to LinkedIn as soon as next month, making it the latest platform to adopt its own version of the freshest social medium.

As we’ve pointed out before, the ”social audio” competition has been heating up for a while now. LinkedIn was reportedly looking into this for a while, but now it’s officially getting in the game.

The Clubhouse-style audio rooms will be one option for those who want to take advantage of a newly refreshed suite of Live Event features and upgrades coming to the platform.

Here’s how the Audio Events will look:

The feature will be a new option for hosting LinkedIn Live broadcasts—a live streaming feature that has been around since at least 2019. The features rolling out now aim to make the experience of attending events hosted directly on LinkedIn more dynamic and interactive.

Being an active part of the conversation at an event can help you make new connections, bolster your professional brand and inspire peers.
— Jake Poses, Director of Product (Video, Creators, Events) @ LinkedIn

The Audio Events feature is only available to “a few thousand creators” right now, but attendance is open to anyone. The ability to host events should be rolling out to a wider batch of creators in the coming months. (TBD on when/if it will be widely available—but it’s a safe bet that if this goes well, it will happen eventually.)

The other upgraded event options also include the Video Event and Live Broadcast features shown below:

Why it Matters

Ever since the pandemic hit, virtual events have become a way of life for many professionals. Often hosted on platforms like Zoom, Eventbrite, or Meetup, it appears that LinkedIn wants to get in on the hosting game (most orgs are promoting their events on LinkedIn anyway, so why not close the loop?).

LinkedIn claims to be uniquely positioned to host virtual and hybrid events because it helps with event discovery, it already hosts the largest online professional community, and it’s a place where you already go to “learn from industry voices.”

For those hosting events, this could be the beginning of a beautiful new relationship with LinkedIn.
